This post on Food + Tech called "Carbs Are Killing You" got my attention mainly because of this beautiful infographic but it also gives a great example of how people often think they are eating much healthier than they actually are:
“One of our users was starting off each morning with a Jamba Juice fruit smoothie, thinking it was a really healthy substitute for breakfast. Every day as he used The Eatery, he got feedback that his smoothie was not nearly as healthy as he had rated it. He had no idea how high the sugar and carb content was. We’ve heard about loads of “ah-ha!” moments like this particularly about carbs, when users of The Eatery learn, through a tight feedback loop, that their decisions aren’t nearly as healthy as they thought.”
Need help figuring out what to eat? Try the app mentioned above, The Eatery, an iPhone app from Massive Health. They claim that "Lots of apps tell you what you ate. Only The Eatery can tell you how you eat."

New York, This is Why You're Fat
If you didn't already know, we are right in the middle of New York City's 20th "Restaurant Week," which has been extended to a full 20 days of discounted deliciousness all over the city. How a week lasts 20 days can only be explained by a combination of media hype-fueled excitement and a flashback of last Restaurant Week's food coma. We seem to love nothing more than stuffing ourselves full of three-course prix-fixe menus of things we've never heard of covered in bacony goodness or the too many desserts we would never have ordered if they weren't included. Sometimes just for the chance to eat in a restaurant we couldn't otherwise afford.
From the organizer's website: "Over the past 20 years, NYC Restaurant Week has grown tremendously yet has remained committed to giving visitors and residents the opportunity to experience the quality, variety and hospitality that embody the NYC dining experience." If your mouth is watering now just thinking about all that good stuff you could be eating, head on over to http://www.nycgo.com/restaurantweek and get yourself a reservation for lunch ($24.07) or dinner ($35).
If you can't afford to take part in this New York institution, there are tons of recipes out there to make your own creative cooking concoctions at home and on the cheap. Another entry in the "This is Why You're Fat" archive is this Sweet and Spicy Nutella-Coated Bacon recipe we found referenced on the best named blog on the planet, Mr. Baconpants, seen in the photo above. Week One Update
FattyFatOff 2012 is in full swing with one week down and an extraordinary showing of weight loss by the usual cast of characters and a few newcomers taking the competition by storm. Its still very early in the race and it can be anyone's game in the end, but the enthusiastic showing in week one is very promising. They've dropped a total of nearly 70 pounds between them in just 7 days!
So are the newbies in it for the long-haul or are they going to sprint through the first few weeks and run out of steam? They talk a big game but they will need to stay motivated throughout the coming weeks. With the addition of the Fatty Fantasy League minutes before the weigh-in, most of the 2012 competitors should be cheered on along the way and push themselves to keep their eyes on the prize.
